Tempted by something sweet

This wasp seems attracted to the Buddleia - and it's not the only one. It's brought quite a few of it's friends along, but they dart around so quickly its difficult to get more than one. I guess its the sugar rush of the nectar.

Those wings have a certain sheen to them, maybe they have to be polished every morning before leaving the house.

Nectar is mostly a solution of table sugar (sucrose) mixed with fruit sugar (fructose) and glucose (your basic monosaccharide). It has other things mixed in too - so I suppose its a bit like coke, coke zero, cherry coke, coke with a twist etc. None of the insects seem to be looking for the diet brand though - and you never see an overweight wasp.
