Edge of the universe

This is an extract from the poem 'Milky Way Bar', by Bill Manhire, featured on the Wellington Writers' Walk.

The walk traverses Wellington harbour's waterfront. Along the walk, extracts from poems and prose by well known New Zealand writers and poets, which have a clear connection to the windy city, are cast on concrete slabs.

Some extracts are in clearly visible positions. Others, like "edge of the universe", are tucked away in odd corners, and you come upon them unexpectedly.

This is what it's like to live in Wellington. It's a city of big spaces - the hills, the harbour, the bush, the coast, the sea. And it's a city of nooks and cranies, with surprises around every corner, even for a native like me.
