etching seconds and minutes of your life

You hang prayer beads, dig and carve out into hard stone, names and faces, etching seconds and minutes of your life, onto this unforgiving, dark surface that gives off heat, pulling in the air and light around it.

You stand against this wall, pressing yourself against it, trying to find the softness, trying to find the place where it gives, and you can almost pretend it's a human body, soft and warm.

You do all of this, an attempt, to remind yourself

you are still

alive.
