to close out the outside world

Edit: I changed the picture to a black and white wider shot. I had a change of heart. Thank you to those who left comments on the first one - and I'm sorry!

This is home. That is what kept going through my mind as I looked out over the city. This is someone's home. They chose to paint those shutters red and green. And the little shack on the roof, it's not much, it's not much at all. But they drape tarps, pulled tight together, to close out the outside world. There are washing lines. In other buildings, the balconies are painted bright turquoise with patterns drawn out on the wall. It really isn't much. But these are people's homes. This is where they come each night, after a long day at work, and slip inside the door, turn on the light, and rest.

Other photos from today

You are now outside al-Qahira (al-Qahira is the Arabic name for Cairo and it literally means victorious. This sign is at the stairs leading up to the roof of Bab Zuweila, which once marked the borders of the city)
