Photographed this in the ancient churchyard in the village of Straiton. The original gravestone is also there but this replacement one is more legible.

Many of the Covenanters were prepared to die rather than renounce their religious beliefs.

Claverhouse's Dragoons hunted down the Covenanters and if caught were given the choice of renouncing the Covenant or instant execution. It was a particularly bloody period in Scottish history. Incidentally the war cry of the Covenanters was reputed to be 'Jesus, and no quarter' IE no mercy.

I wonder how many of todays Christians would be prepared to die for their beliefs.
