The Woodlanders

Snapshot into the Past

I had the opportunity today of photographing some extraordinary wall paintings, which were originally painted in about 1350-1360. As in most English churches, these paintings were hidden behind whitewash for nearly 600 years until they were discovered and uncovered in the 1930s, and now preserved. The paintings were intended as a teaching device for a mostly illiterate community; the image here showing part of the story of the Tree of Jesse.
