Swooping low over the gorse and hugging the ground like jet fighters, two house martins dart over Blackford Hill in dogged pursuit, revealing a sleek aerodynamic form that modern military aircraft designers can only dream of emulating; a form that evolution has taken thousands of years and billions of miles to perfect, for soon these birds and their fellows will migrate south - to winter in North Africa.
