West Kennet Long Barrow

Up very early for the five mile drive to Avebury -- and then a walk across the harvested fields to the West Kennet Long Barrow.

If you want magical then this is the place!

This prehistoric tomb was constructed around 3500BC -- that`s 5600 years ago! It was used as a tomb for a thousand years. Just think about that: one thousand years of ancient peoples processing up this hill to this bleak but beautiful windy summit to intern the bones of their leaders or their loved ones.

If only we could turn the clock back...

But their monumental tomb is still here for us to wonder over. Stand outside and be dwarfed by the gateway stones; walk inside and stand in awe of this peaceful holy place. The pagan cathedral of simple heathen people trying to survive and understand the strange new world in which they lived -- and died.

A very special place in our historic county of Wiltshire.
