Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea spectabilis

This is a macro of the new bougainvillea plant we bought to grow along the back fence. Butterflies (Monarch especially) love this plant.
I guess those very tiny little white flower part of the plant make good nectar.
This one is a sort of purple-ish red. Most of the bougainvillea I see around in San Diego is more of a true red.
These are very colorful, but also "thorny" plants. I guess that's why most of them are planted along fences.
