PA 474

This is PA474 of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which we somehow managed to see today at RAF Leuchars. Dad's 65th birthday present was to go back for the airshow today, to see the Vulcan bomber in flight, it being one of the aircraft he was ground crew for in his RAF days. I say "somehow" because we barely made it.

We managed briefs glimpses of the Vulcan while sitting in the three-hour queue of traffic through Cupar en route to the show. Stupidly, I'd thought an hour of spare time would be a sufficient margin to get to the airbase, but the organisers of the show, and an accident somewhere on the A91 put paid to that. It took us nearly 6 hours, all in, to get from Glasgow to Leuchars. Not funny.

It worries me slightly that these people are charged with defending the country. You might think that, living on the damp soggy island we're on, setting up the park and ride car parks in fields prone to flooding might not be clever. You might think that checking the weather forecasts and noting the strong possibility of heavy rain would send someone scurrying off to look up the contingency plan. But no. Ah well.

If we go back in future years, we'll be taking the train. Though I'm sure something disastrous will happen there too.

Edit: turns out this is my 700th entry, though it's a slight cheat since Friday's blip isn't up yet. Too tired just now to add that too, off to bed.
