HEAVENFIELD

This is St Oswald church just outside Hexham. Oswald was the son of Aethelfrith, the king of Bernicia.
The battle of Heavenfield took place in about 634, at that probably Hadrian wall was largely intact at this spot. However, not much is known about this battle.

Monks from Hexham abbey held annual pilgrimage to Heaven field.
An annual pilgrimage from Hexham to Heaven field is still held, on or around St Oswald's day (5th August).
