Jamestown Prison

Today Mr Lartey took us to the Jamestown Palace to ask about the kids and us using it as a location for their film. Mr Lartey seems to have his finger in a lot of pies and sorted everything out for us :) after having a look around the palace he asked if we'd like to see the old Jamestown Prison across the street. This place is not open to the public, but again with Mr Lartey by our side there wasn't any problems.

This place was built during the slave trade and had all the features including a 'door of no return'. Each fort had one of these where the slaves would be led out to the waiting ship to take them away. This place was pretty 'full on'. Although we've already been to the Cape Coast fort, (the largest and most famous slave fort - Obama visited just after becoming president) this place was a lot more personal. The fact that it wasn't open to the public, but even more significantly is that it was a functioning prison up until 2007! Quite haunting to say the least.

These are bits of rope and plastic which the prisoners used to hang things on and save them putting anything down on the floor which was otherwise used as there bed and toilet.
