Bikes Rule!

Hub on Wheels today, and I'm proud to say that we rode in it. Almost 5000 lycra enthusiasts cyclists gathered at 8 am at Government Center for the kick off - there were multicolored helmets as far as the eye could see. Our route took us through some of Boston's best neighbourhoods, starting off with a forwards and backwards loop down Storrow Drive, then through Brookline to Jamaica Pond and on to the Arboretum, where we stopped for a break. It's sobering to notice that a few of the maple trees have already turned flaming red. Then on through Forest Hills cemetery (Boston is not afraid to make good public use of its cemeteries!), past Franklin Park and on into my old haunts in Dorchester. I'm glad that we rode through some of the less fashionable parts of town. The home stretch took us onto the Harborwalk, past the JFK library (where I took this shot), Carson Beach and South Boston (which you can see on the far side of the bay) and over the Northern Avenue Bridge and back into town. This was a 30 mile route (the odometer read 33) and the tough guys took in extra loops and rode fifty. We felt good enough at the end to contemplate riding the longer route next year. Bikes Rule! At least for today.
