Drying maize

But, poet, let
history rest in its shroud;
praise with your lyre
the grain in its granaries:
sing to the simple maize in the kitchen

from "Ode To Maize" by Pablo Neruda

The last of the maize harvest has been gathered in for a few weeks now, and the houses are adorned with maize cobs hung up to dry. Once dry, families get to work stripping the cobs of the grain, which is then gathered to be used later in the year.

This photograph was taken in Dhulikhel, but in truth it could be almost anywhere in the Kavre district at this time of year...
