Alistair, as a court-going solicitor was a well-known figure on the Edinburgh legal scene through his working life - and, in fact, remains so well beyond. He has been honoured in many ways - not least in the form of an OBE, but wears his distinctions with great modesty.

One abiding interest throughout his career has been forensic science - and he has contributed to that science - both through the literature and by his Presidency of the Forensic Society.

His autobiography "The Treasured Years" is prefaced with a quote from The Odes of Horace. In translation - "Whatever the sum of days afforded to you, think of them as treasure". Good advice.
