Road Marking, Banchory

Ever wondered how all those road markings get to be there? And how they usually manage to make them so neat?

I was able to study the whole process at close hand in Banchory this morning, as two friendly Aberdeenshire Council workers completed some markings to assist traffic turning right into the yard of the Council offices at the west end of the High Street.

The best bit was seeing them fill in this magnificent right turn arrow: the white tar mixture is poured onto the road surface via a rectangular spreading box with a long steel handle, with which one of the operatives guides the box skilfully along the outline that's already been marked in dashed paint on the road.

Note too the triangular mask made out of (?) paper, to produce such sharp points at the head of the arrow.
