Waverley mystery

Call me sad, but I can't help wondering what's beneath the white panel to the right of the war memorial plaque at Waverley station. There's exactly the same thing on the opposite side of the station, next to M&S.

Covered up to protect it, perhaps? Or hiding something inaccurate or inappropriate?

Impossible to say. And how would you go about finding out?

Then I realised I should ask the blippers. If MAiT doesn't know, I'll eat my hat.
