Macro DIY

This flower close-up is another experiment in improvised macro photography (i.e: macro when you have no macro lens).

For this image I coupled a Canon 80-200mm f/4L II USM lens with a older Canon EF 50mm f/2.8 lens by mounting the 50mm in reverse to the 200mm. I used a modified foam beer can holder to join the two lenses together which was quicker and cheaper than trying to purchase a ring mount adaptor.

The magnification was HUGE. I'm guessing it was around 5X life size.

Basic technique:
-Use a tripod
-Mount 80-200mm to DSLR
-Rack zoom out to 200mm
-Focus to minimum distance
-Attach 50mm lens in reverse (front to front)
-Move rig towards subject to adjust focus.

Tips

-Use a small f/stop for max depth of field
-Don't zoom out or vignetting will occur.
-Use a remote release to eliminate vibration
-For ultimate sharpness: Canon Live View + Silent Mode = Tack Sharp. Trust me.
