Creating journey sticks at Losehill Hall

Our first day of a new CPD project to develop teachers thinking about geography & the Global Dimension. We felt it would enable everyone to get to know one another a little better if we headed outside for the first part of the afternoon.

Journey sticks are a very effective tool used to help recall the places visited so that the journey can be mapped at a later stage. When using these ideas with children we emphasise `valuing the earth' and the earth's resources. Our thinking goes something like this: without valuing our own environment how can we get children to value a part of the earth that they have never visited and with which they have no prior connection. Something that is essential if we want them to engage with the idea of sustainability - an essential requirement of a global understanding.
