The Rice Bowl

By MountainJoe

Arbutus menziesii

The Pacific Madrone is another of my favorite local trees - they have a beautiful red bark that peels, exposing wonderful patterns but I also like the colorful green leaves.

It is also one of the best burning woods and is sought out locally for winter firewood as it burns hot and long.

Like the Redwood trees, these Pacific Madrones are only found along the western coast of North America and like direct sun, proliferating at the higher elevations.
