Going to Seed

Seed pods and the last blossoms vie for attention on this Hesperaloe branch.

Technically, this plant is Hesperaloe parviflora, also known as Red yucca. It is part of the Agave family. According to Pima County Cooperative Extension it is currently first or second in popularity of landscape plants in Tucson.

This plant was revived from near death, when it was dug up and eaten by javelinas the first week after it was planted five years ago. The landscaper plugged the remains back into the soil and the plant has recovered. That little episode caused us to install fences and a gate to isolate our back yard.
