Blink and shift

Last night as we drove back, street lights shining through the mist created a mood at once eerie and mysterious. It wasn't all mist really, large contributions were from Diwali crackers. The aftermath of the celebrations are always about littered roads, burnt scraps filling every inch of them, silent empty bottles that had launched rockets into the sky, a new kind of silence and the faint trace of a burn lingering in the air. The mist didn't settle today. And I didn't ride. It was a good day for a movie or two.

Cet obscur objet du désir dealt with the obsessiveness, deceit and lust. The protagonist's leading character's naivete can be laughable, but I am sure even the smartest amongst us are capable of follies worse. I am more curious about the leading lady's role and wonder what other reasons she had for toying with the him apart from self-deceit and amusement. Bergman's Viskningar och rop dealt with relationships within families among other themes, the sticky question of distances and closeness, handling the ironies with subtlety and brilliance. Not only is idealism not dead even in the most bitter cynic (though it may be buried deep within), the former fathers the latter until middle ground is sought.
