The cake is/not a lie.

For his birthday, J asked for only a cake. There's really no stopping my legendary gift-giving prowess, sanctioned or not, but who am I, a theoretical baker, to deny my boy anything on his birthday? There's just one small problem...I'm not so much with the cake-baking. I'm good for cupcakes and cookies and I'm game for experimenting, but cake has always seemed so...presentation-specific, celebratory, almost intimidating somehow. I needed a practice go at it to boost my confidence.

The main event isn't for a couple of weeks yet, but I thought tomorrow's Thanksgiving guests would enjoy my practice run. ;)
