Red-Breasted Nuthatch

This is the smaller cousin of the White-Breasted Nuthatch but this one does not stay around all year. He apparently does not like our summers. He is only about 4 ½ inches and tends to feed upside down like his cousin. Males and females are similar but the female has a gray top of head instead of black.

Today he was sharing the feeder with a Downy Woodpecker who just extracted a huge piece of suet, greedy thing.

The clarity could be better but I have tried to catch him for a while now and it is the best photo to date.

Today is that crazy day in the U.S. known as Black Friday. People camp out all night outside of stores to be among the first customers when the stores open at 3 or 4 a.m. A few years ago, our local WalMart made the national news when people trampled each other racing into the store for the deals. It is insane, and we stay as far away as we can.

I hope it is sane where you are today.
