South from Rams Dale

I headed into the hills of Orphir. Didn't get too far, really, when the drifts started getting thigh-deep. Still, it was nice. I got to the top of an old peat road and thought I might persevere and carry on till I reached the Stromness-Kirkwall road but the track was indistinguishable, drifts difficult and I was now exposed to the very raw wind, so I just headed back the way I'd come.
Lots of tracks of rabbits and hares but no actual animals. A few pheasants, and the calls of a red grouse. Below the village, three woodcock appeared. They fly in a very formal way.
