Egg and Maize

Nearly didn't blip today - It's becoming more of a challenge not to do so!

The ostrich egg was given by my great uncle from South Africa to my grandparents as a wedding present in 1901! I think it must have been fashionable in those days to have curios as ornaments. The maize cobs we grew here by the acre and I picked a few up to dry. This crop is grown for animal feed and is not particularly tasty for humans to eat. The whole plant is finely shredded by a maize harvester when still green in about September /October and then put into the silage pit to make nutritious fodder for the winter.
