Progress

It happens most everywhere, I guess.

Just east of La Quinta there is a good amount of agricultural development and east of that is the Colorado Desert. It is enjoyable to see the remaining date palm orchards. And even the cultivated vegetable fields are pleasant.

But the urban sprawl of the Palm Springs development is drifting east and encroaching upon the orchards, farmlands and natural environments. At the margins there is an economical and ecological brawl. The rural lands are losing the fight. They say about 50% of the major date palm orchards have been replaced by housing and commercial developments. The farmers are being pushed south into the Imperial Valley and the Salton Sea.

As we grow to appreciate the surrounding desert it is sad to see this change happening leterally before our eyes.

That's progress. Too bad. I'll be back in the desert tomorrow.
