The Edge of the Wold

Fairfield Horseshoe

The photo shows Simon on the approach to the top of Fairfield in the Lake District, with cloud coating the top of the ridge. There should have been three of us, but Matt had a dog walking injury.

We set off from Rydal and walked the Fairfield Horseshoe in perfect powder and crunchy snow conditions. It looked as if no more than three people had followed the route before us since the snow came down on Friday evening.

The top of Fairfield was shrouded in cloud that was working its way up the opposite side of the mountain and spilling over onto our side.

We were going to tell Matt how awful it had been: cloud on the top, extremely cold, slippery ice, no birds, snow blindness: but it's all lies. It was brilliant blue skies all the way, perfect snow conditions, superb views of ravens, and almost no-one else about. It was a little cold, but the wind was gentle and the wind chill tolerable.

Definitely best viewed large.
