Hoiho

We went to Roaring Bay today, where there are about 20 breeding pairs of Yellow Eyed Penguins nesting. Hoiho (Yellow Eyed Penguins) are the rarest penguin in the world and are native to New Zealand. The only places they nest are on the Otago Peninsula, the Catlins and Stewart Island.

This pair came out of the sea and headed pretty rapidly up the beach and into the grass. My zoom isn't really effective enough to do them justice from the hide, which is high up on the hill, but seeing them was pretty exciting. I like this shot because of the shadows and reflections.
