Thistle Down

By Ethel

My Nic-Nac Lady

My nic-nac on the parlor shelf,
Was very dear to me.
And as I watched...she moved...I thought,
And raised her eyes to see.

I listened to her - soft and sweet.
As she said in tones so low and weak.
"Long years ago...I came to you,
Now for a moment...let me speak.

"You see, I came from far away",
Far off...across the blue.
And then one day you paid the price,
And took me home...with you.

"I've watched you from my pedestal,
On this shelf above.
But never before have I spoke to you,
Nor told to you...my love".

O woman...O woman...can I believe,
As you hold me in a trance?
The nic-nac lady picked up her skirts,
And went moving in a dance.
