Long Meg and Her Daughters

Neolithic stone circle to the east of the Eden valley near Penrith, this is one of the most dramatic prehistoric sites in the UK but very definitely off the beaten track. The sheer scale of the circle (actually an oval) is second only to Avebury. A wonderful place full of local legend.

Long Meg herself (foreground) is red sandstone. She overlooks 69 erratic boulders of granite.
