Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Symbols of mortality and immortality

This 18th century stone grave slab lies in the Holyrood graveyard in Newburgh. The slab is carved with traditional symbols of our mortality (skull, hourglass, mortbell, crossed leg-bones, mausoleum and coffin) and of Christian immortality (bible, angels with trumpets announcing the resurrection). The rather eroded banner across the top is carved with the the epitaph "Memento Mori" which may be freely translated as "Remember that you must die".
