Dorset Barn # 1: Sea Barn Farm

Last weekend I posted a 'barn on wheels' (which turned out to be a shepherds hut, not really a barn) and people seemed to like the idea of an occasional series on barns/agricultural heritage.

This is a typical old Dorset barn at Ringstead Bay, where I often walk. It was re-thatched a couple of years ago and is in use as a winter shelter for cattle. It's great that so many old barns round here have been restored as barns; it costs a lot of money to re-thatch every 20 years and they're not suitable for modern storage requirements.

Seconds after I took this I slipped, causing a noisy pheasant to get up and frighten the cows out of the yard. Then lots more decided to come out and start the day.
