Thorny business

The acacia tree, one of the most off-putting plants with long, sharp thorns, is a lifesaver for this Nigerien community. It not only helps combat encroaching desertification, but its sap is worth gold for the growers. It is sold for a variety of uses, including as a softener in soft drinks.
