Upper Aberglaslyn Estuary

Prior to the 19th century the location that I took this picture from was the tidal Traeth Mawr, before the construction of The Cob by William Madocks.

Ranged in this view is the vista of mountains in Snowdonia, including Knicht.

Taken from a train on the return to Porthmadog from Hafod-y-Llyn, near Nantmor (close to the south end of Aberglaslyn Pass) on the former Portmadoc, Beddgelert and South Snowdon Railway, closer to its junction with the former Creosor Tramway. Timetabled trains north from Porthmadog Harbour started in January 2011, following a 13 year project to rebuild the Welsh Highland Railway.

In early 2010 trains, run by the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, from Caernarfon terminated at Hafod-y-Llyn (see my blip on 7 April 2010 of a train at Hafod-y-Llyn), and by the end of May 2010 the service was extended to Pont Creosor adjacent to the RSPB Glaslyn Osprey project visitor centre. Special trains run through to Porthmadog on 30 October 2010.
