Protest?

Its not often that I'm witness to some 'breaking news' ... but as I went out for a sandwich at lunchtime during my hectic daytrip to London I got a front row seat for the NUJ's protest at the announcements today about the future of the BBC World Service.

I took several things from this chance encounter:

1. Its worth carrying my camera around (well I knew that already);

2. What looks like a protest is not always a protest. It was more like a carefully staged photoshoot with a dozen 'protesters' holding hastily constructed placards. And some lillies, probably from the reception desk;

3. My shots are at least as good as the bloke who's shot the BBC licensed from AP (see the link above) and I should have got them onto Getty right then. I must have been within a couple of feet of the guy;

4. A good protest always attracts some socialist workers ... a few of whom were marching along the Aldwych with their ready for any cause "Fight for your Rights" banner. Presumably to join in - or perhaps steal some of the attention;

5. This placard would have been much funnier with the addition of one letter.

Ach well - end of a very long day - bed for me.
