Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Two right Royal trees

In 1857 Queen Victoria and Albert The Prince Consort visited Haddo House, the Aberdeenshire home of George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, who had served as the Queen's prime minister from 1852 to 1855. During their stay Victoria and Albert planted these two large Wellingtonias; Victoria's tree is the one on the left and Albert's the one to the right.

It is said that the 4th Earl was one of Queen Victoria's favourite Prime Ministers and it was he who persuaded her to buy Balmoral which at the time was lived in by his brother as a Tenant of the Earl of Fife.
