as quickly as it came

I've never been entirely sure what the building next door was for; it always used to be a commercial premise but was heavily modified shortly after we moved in to the extent that we were certain it was being converted into flats into which we would be able to peer through our window. After a little while sitting gleamingly empty a security guard, some rack-mounted servers and some empty office furniture were installed in the ground floor accompanied by the occasional presence on occasional weekday mornings of three or four cleaners smirking tabs in the lane outside the back door. A little while later the empty desks and cabinets were populated by a variety of types of largish CRT monitor and the servers mostly disappeared. The lights on the ground floor were mostly on during the day but at night only dim emergency lighting was visible; the upper floors were never illuminated although I did occasionally spot movement in the stairwell, presumably a security patrol. Throughout all this a little nameplate on the door declared "[something] Training" but the TO LET sign remained in place except when it was blown down by high winds and was eventually kicked into the lane.

Yesterday a van appeared in the lane and much crashing was heard. Today it was pretty much empty again by the time I came past after a smallish walk in the oppressively humid air (annoying considering how lovely and freezing it was on Saturday evening). Maybe this time it'll be converted into the combination coffee-shop/gallery/music shop/bookshop the space is ideal for and with which the area could really do.
