Streets in the Sky

Popped into an exhibition for 5 minutes today with original models from the 50s and 60s showing what beautiful places tower block estates would be. Replacing terraced housing with areas of open green space thanks to the streets being arranged vertically, inspired in a spirit of aspirational modernity by Le Corbusier.

Came away partly feeling that the planners actually believed it, partly that they just thought it was a cheap way to cram people in and the models were a cynical attempt to convince the occupiers how lovely it would be... honest.

Or perhaps thats just retrospective cynicism on my part. The feeling of isolation from the occasional lit windows was palpable sat at the traffic lights in strong wind & rain.
