USS Intrepid, New York

A US Navy aircraft carrier launched in August 1943. Participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and Okinawa, hit by kamikazes.

Decommissioned in 1947, she was recommissioned as attack carrier in 1954 with angled fight desk added in 1957.

In the early 60s she was recovery ship for Mercury and Gemini space muserums.

In 1966 Intrepid served off Vietnam.

And was finally decommissioned in 1974, becoming a Museum Ship in 1982 after a campaign to serve her.

During 9/11 Intrepid served as the FBI operations centre.

This photo of the Intrepid's "Island" and captain's bridge was taken on a cold snowy day in New York.
