Forest Dew

Early morning at Culpepper's Dish, doing my last but one winter bird survey. It's been a struggle to get them done this winter, but I should be able to fit my final one in before the end of February. Then it's just the summer surveys and the four-year Bird Atlas project will be finished.

The idea is to chart changes in populations of our birds in summer and winter quite scientifically. Results so far show dramatic changes since the last survey 20 years ago, and even more so since the first one in the late 60s. Not all bad; some species like little egret weren't here at all 20 years ago.

I get the impression most of the birds round here have held up quite well through the harsh winter.
