Red-cockaded Woodpecker

We were in Ocala National Forest, in Florida, mainly in search of this bird.

Red-cockaded woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) are an endangered species now limited to certain old-growth pine forests in the southeastern U.S. We had previously seen them in Georgia (I believe in a national forest not too far from Atlanta--my memory is fuzzy). The distinguishing red on the head is not easy to see.

Archived 2011-2-14, in response to gilliebg's blip on Ocala, where you'll find more information on the forest.
