Sweetheart Abbey

A Cistercian abbey that was established in 1273 by Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway. So romantic was she that, when her husband, Lord John Balliol, father of the future King of Scots and founder of Balliol College Oxford, died, she had his heart embalmed and preserved in an ivory casket. His heart then adorned her dining table, at which she entertained the poor and needy.
