Honey bee

After watching a very arresting documentary last night, we thought the fine weather today was a perfect opportunity to see how our bees had fared over the winter. It was a great relief to see that the two main colonies looked to be in fine health. The much smaller third colony that was established very late in the summer didn't have any life in it, though we weren't too surprised about that.

The shock of being disturbed seemed to galvanise the bees into action. Most of them flew about a bit and then rested on the Dutch barn, basking in the warm sun.
