At the end of the line - butt ends and buffers

What caught my eye here was the enormous amount of discarded cigarette ends. Then I realised they were piled up just beyond the buffers at the end of the line.
As I'm a doctor, my mind's never far away from health issues and it struck me then that this was an interesting image - phrases like "hit the buffers", "end of the line" came to mind.
