Advocate's Close?

Taking a shortcut from Cockburn Street to the High Street (Royal Mile) by this Close (and lots of steps) ... but was there really only one Advocate?

Fortunately an earlier generation of the City of Edinburgh's sign makers managed to get the apostrophe in the correct place - assuming there was more than one advocate!
