Life is fleeting. . .

This was taken in the Carriage Workshops Eveleigh - an old industrial complex built in the 1890's. At its peak in the 1970's 1200 men were employed here. A steam whistle would be heard throughout the area at shift changes and people streamed in and out of the building.

There was a great strike in 1917 against the introduction of a card system to record productivity which originated at this workshop. This strike lead to the formation of the National Union of Railwaymen, then know as the 'scab' union.

It seems ironic that, this historic building renowned for tight control, now is an art gallery with fathers chasing their boys on bicycles around the foyer. They were asked to leave, but hey, as the sculpture says, Life is fleeting. . .
