The Remarkables

Today, we went LOTR movie set hunting. First stop was Karawau River aka. the Anduin where the fellowship passes by the Argonath (Pillars of the Kings). It did not look as impressive as in the movie though. Next, our underpowered campervan "Samwise the Brave" had to struggle 13km in lowest gear up a steep gravel road to a skifield in this mountain range near Queenstown. There, the scenes of LOTR were shot showing the fellowship just after they lost Gandalf in the mines of Moria and reenacted part of it ;-). The view from the top of the range is also very spectacular and well worth the climb over boulders and rubble. It allows a look at the Deer Park Heights - another LOTR filming location just to the right of this picture which had unfortunately been closed for the public recently.
