Kestrel

After a slow start to the day, we headed off to a nearby beach to get some shell sand to mix in with the mortar. We're using it to point the paving slabs we're laying at the back of the house. On the way there we spotted this kestrel hovering at the edge of the road. He was completely oblivious to us, concentrating on watching his prey down on the beach.

On the shell sandy beach we met a lovely old couple, both with walking sticks, enjoying the sunshine, pottering along the sand. They live in a village about 23 miles away, but like to go and explore at weekends. Although it was sunny it wasn't particularly warm but they were well wrapped up and we stood and had a nice chat. As Ollie raced up and down the beach, in and out of the sea, the couple said, as they went back to their car, that if they met someone to enjoy a chat with, they never thought a trip was a waste of a day out! I hope when we are their age we will still be pottering around looking for shells on sunny days, meeting nice folk!
