Obelisk

This is one of many rock formations at Bandon, OR. The obelisk is pillow basalt, lava that erupted under water. As it is harder than the surrounding sandstone, these stone monoliths remain.

Coos Indian legend tells of a young indian maiden that went down to the beach with her animal friends only to be swept out to sea when the ground began to shake and a giant wave rushed onto the land. Their legend tells that the girl was rescued by the Gods and turned into the stone formation Face Rock we see. The pets also were rescued and turned to some of the smaller stone monoliths in the group.
